can’t stop laughing at this excerpt from the kamierabi roundtable

SESHITA: No, you can say you were totally disappointed. I'm fine; I mean, all that is in the open now, so we're good.”

imagine you’re a producer fishing to create an anime original series. gifted a concept by yoko taro, you manage to corral jin (kagerou daze) to write and ohkubo (soul eater, fire force) to provide designs for what should be a perfect assemblage of edge. none of this will matter to the audience, because you’ve also decided to rope in hiroyuki seshita, the guardian of polygon pictures flings like sidonia and urobutcher godzilla that perfected CG sci-fi grime. undeserving or not, and even with names like ryo-timo coming along for the ride, your show is now cast forever in the dye of CG slop. three episodes into airing, it will hover around a 5/10 rating on MAL and have one of the worst post-episode survey rankings for a live broadcast on niconama in its season. there is nothing you can do about this except pray that word of mouth buzzes enough to make people see past it.

honestly, I don’t really fault anyone for not looking deeper than surface level here, and seshita isn’t entirely undeserved in being sort of a path of least resistance for CG hate, but it is surprising to me that most people seem to have bypassed this show entirely even after it’s been attributed so heavily to yoko taro. it does make it feel like this staff lineup was devised only to deliver the largest blow of mental damage possible to anyone that cares about such things. unsurprisingly, most of it looks pretty junk, and the combat only begins to look passable thanks to some decent compositing, but there’s a weird… filth to it all that I see promise in. if it’s not going to be remembered for a dude straight up jacking it in the first episode, then it’ll have to be as the reason why yoko taro had to wear a leprechaun mask. absolutely, horrendously cursed.
